Dear students, for this weekly forum we will discuss about: ETHICS & RESEARCH
You must answer one or both questions with a response of at least 200 words and using at least one reference in APA style.
A) In which way can your current research (from 1st period) can fall into unethical procedures?
B) Do you think ethics can be limiting new researchers? What are the benefits of having an ethical framework in research?
Remember that our deadline is Friday, October 15th before 11:59 pm. :)
PUT YOUR NAME AND LAST NAME IN YOUR ANSWER.

ResponderBorrarB) Yes, because there are situations in which in order to obtain new knowledge, we have to do things that we might don´t like because it contradicts our ethics principles, norms and values.
One example of how ethics has limited new researchers are with the geneticist. What is a geneticists? A geneticist is a medic/scientific that studies the DNA and are directly involve in unlocking the secretes of life.
Geneticists are often restricted by research laws like the Declaration of Helsinki, which it includes that the subjects must always be informed and willing, respect and cared for the research and that their wellbeing is more important than a scientific advancement. Even though genetic modification on human embryos is now permitted, there isn´t a single product of these practice that is allowed to be implemented or carried to term. These means that the effects of genetic manipulation are unknown beyond the embryo. Human experimentation is also very controlled with the regard to ethical issues.
An example of how an unethical studies have had an important guides for modern research is the knowledge of how long it´s possible to survive in several cold-water temperatures. This knowledge was obtained by Nazi scientists. I don´t say it was right what they did but that sometimes ethic can be limiting new researchers.
The benefits of having an ethical framework in research is that it promote the application of the human rights, the welfare of the animals, respect for the people, beneficence of the person participating, justice, etc. Ethical research have had great benefits to the people participating in the research and also for the people doing the research.

ResponderBorrarI think there's a huge misconception in what science should be. Yes, we're supposed to strive towards the truth, and towards knowledge, but we mustn't forget the purpose of knowledge. At the end of the day, everythig should be "for the benefit of the human race", but this concept accepts the end justifying the means. We keep thinking of ways to analyze the evils of this world in order to avoid them, but to study them we'd have to recreate them, so yes, ethics DOES limit research, but that's what it's supposed to DO, it's a hard line that we shouldn't cross, because it defeats the purpose. Nowadays, scientific models and simulations are being worked upon digitally, so we can reach a day and age where we can just simulate a human being and have the computer give us the answers (Hinsen, 2020), but it would be presumptious of me to say we could have reached this without the bloody history science has had. At the end of the day it's not a matter of accepting the fact that it was done, it's more so about trying to not fall into these mistakes again, that's also part of research, the mistakes were done, we learn on them, not do them again.

ResponderBorrarThe research paper that my team made talked about how returning fashion trends impact the lives of consumers, either it being socially, psychologically or economically. I can only think of three things that could make our research unethical, even though unethical research could occur in several ways.
First, if we managed to statistically manipulate the results of the research in order to reach a desired outcome or change the preexisting one.
Secondly, if we were to subject the participants to totally unnecessary procedures in order to achieve one’s decided hypothesis.
Lastly, if we were to steal information from another research paper without giving it any credit.
Both researchers and participants gain from following ethical norms and principles. To begin with, they aid in the promotion of research's broad goals, such as the pursuit of knowledge and the desire to avoid errors. Second, ethics encourage qualities such as respect, trust, and accountability, which are essential for successful collaboration. Third, they play a vital role in holding researchers accountable to societies and communities, which increases public trust and support for research.
Many or even most ethical codes include the following areas: honesty and integrity, objectivity, carefulness, openness, respect for intellectual property, confidentiality, responsible publication, legality, animal care and human subjects protection.

I have to say that our research can be quite controversial since the issue of vaccines has quite divided sides. There could be unethical aspects such as the way in which we ask people in our area in an insensitive or insulting way, also another section that may be unethical would be to take care of the privacy of our respondents if they did not ask to be exposed in our investigation. I am sure that these types of aspects must be taken care of so as not to make these types of errors in our investigation so that it comes out properly. Ethical conduct in research is important to foster collaboration, cooperation, and trust among scientists to advance research objectives, comply with social responsibility, and avoid or minimize scandals of harm as a result of unethical or illegal behavior. I would say that there are not many ethical benefits for the researcher, but there are more benefits for the interviewees such as respecting the participants, choosing them fairly, and respecting all participants.

ResponderBorrarB) The way research projects can fall into unethical procedures is by as the USPHS Policy defines: “fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results”. The terms can be defined as: fabrication: making up false data and recording it; falsification: which manipulates research materials, equipment or changes and omits data results, which makes the research not accurately represented; plagiarism: which takes another person’s ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.
The last three terms are some of the ways in which our project can fall into unethical procedures. Our project consists on finding the impact of returning fashion trends in our society, while analyzing how it affects psychologically, economically and politically the lives of people. In our research we could fall into unethical procedures by fabricating false responses from the participants that will answer our questionnaire, or by manipulating the responses from participants. We could also manipulate the information from which our research is based upon. The last way we could fall into unethical procedures is by plagiarizing information, by placing graphs, ideas and percentages and not giving the author, or the organization the appropriate credit in the references.

ResponderBorrarB) Ethics in general are the set of moral principles that guide a person's behavior, in the research field ethics focus on the moral principles that researchers must follow in their respective fields of research and investigation process. For maintaining the integrity and validation of the research, ethical principles are crucial, and the researcher must be able to prove the safe-friendly environment their research is made at. Even though sometimes choosing ethical behavior may delay or affect the research in some way, all researchers must be committed to pick ethical decisions rather than unethical that bring fastest results. Answering to the question (do you think ethics can be limiting new researchers? ) yes, ethics can limit new researches but most of the time its for a good reason. Ethics prevent dangerous and harmful procedures that may happen during the experimentation process. Having a ethical framework during a research process helps to ensure the maximum benefit of the research whilst minimizing the risk of actual or potential harm.

ResponderBorrarOur research will be based on surveys that we will apply in our school, our team will try to be the most careful with the questions so as not to be unrepetitive with anyone and to be fair. Despite this, our subject could be considered delicate in a certain way, so I believe that if we mishandle our investigation we could be disrespectful and unethical with someone.
Research has always had problems related to ethics, when investigating certain limits there is no way to do it without being sure that you are not going to break them. This is why new researchers should be careful with the objectives of their studies and their motives, since in certain occasions these lack of ethics can be justified with results. Despite all this, a novice researcher will be afraid of being unethical, so I think there are certain ethical barriers for novice researchers.

ResponderBorrarA) Well, when conducting our research we focus on the points step by step but we do not focus on how it can affect people and how we say that people are, for example: something ethical would be to do an ion research that does not harm anyone, But maybe with our research we can make someone perjido by our points of view and as we said right and without hindrance that can harm someone
B) I believe that ethics is a very good thing since different careers or specialties make use of it and thanks to this there is a control and we can be at peace since if there were no ethics, everyone would do what they wanted regardless of the risks or the consequences that it can bring, but I also believe that in the research branch ethics retains many investigations because the collection of information can only be ethically, for example: from web pages, books or witnesses but information can not be obtained from other sources such as steal information or go to places prohibited by her for example an investigation of Area 51 is very limited since nothing is known about it but if we do not see it ethically, the investigators could go to Area 51 to steal information but thanks to ethics that I would not serve since when you make a documentary you need sources and a source cannot be that you entered to steal information because they would not allow you to publish it and they would put you in the jail.

ResponderBorrarA) In which way can your current research (from 1st period) can fall into unethical procedures?
My first period project, was about the young people and the use of social networks, especially focused on Cyberbulling, I think this theme is more about investigation in different resources, like consulting data, statistics, books, but in the “experimental” and not ethical part it can be to submit a young with good mentally healthy person to social networks and posting bad and hurtful comments to he or she, making the cyber bullying that other young people suffer everyday and see after days of mentally torturing the person, see how the bad coments affects its mental health and its behavior.
B) Do you think ethics can be limiting new researchers? What are the benefits of having an ethical framework in research?
I think the ethics make more control about an investigation, because all research is important to make an experimentation, but with ethics, some discoveries couldn’t be as effective as they are now, nevertheless, the human, animals and plants are very important and have to live freely, so I think ethics are important to live safely and free.
There are several reasons why it is important to adhere to ethical norms in research. First, norms promote the aims of research, such as knowledge, truth, and avoidance of error. For example, prohibitions against fabricating, falsifying, or misrepresenting research data promote the truth and minimize error.

ResponderBorrarB) Ethics is very necessary and in the area of research it becomes crucial to make use of it, because if it is not like that, everyone would establish their rules and set their own limits, everything would become a disaster. If there were no rules to measure and distinguish between good and bad things would lose meaning and we would not be able to act.
Ethical boundaries allow a healthy relationship between the person and others.
I can say that they are like the margins of a road that, on the one hand, reduce the possibilities of our driving, but on the other, they enable us to make it safe and, at the same time, they indicate which is the most viable path. (Zurriarain , 2017)
The fact of taking ethics into account doesn't mean that Progress of the investigation is getting slow, its only taking at an adequate pace the advances that are made in order to not lose control and not harm other individuals, for example many years ago. For years, organ transplantation was a topic that caused a lot of controversy, but if this accepting behavior had not been adopted, it would not have been possible to save the lives of so many people
If you have a clear ethical framework, the different points of view of people are taking in account and thus all options that could represent a danger or damage to the integrity of the human being can be taken into account.
